The alternator decoupler pulley uses a one-way clutch mechanism to absorb belt load fluctuations and reduce wear on the belt drive system, particularly at idle and during deceleration. Signs of failure include: a chirping or rattling noise from the alternator area, accessory belt wear that seems premature, or a pulley that spins freely in both directions when it should only freewheel in one.
