The oil pressure switch is an electromechanical device that triggers the oil pressure warning system when pressure drops below the safe minimum, alerting the driver to a potentially damaging condition. Signs of failure include: a persistent oil pressure warning light with normal oil level, or oil leaking from the switch body or threads. Confirm with a mechanical gauge before replacement, and address any actual low pressure condition before it causes internal engine damage.
