The evaporative emissions vapor canister captures fuel vapors from the fuel tank using activated charcoal, storing them until the engine is running and can draw them in to be burned rather than releasing them to the atmosphere. Signs of a failed canister include: a check engine light with EVAP codes, a fuel smell near the rear of the vehicle, or a canister that is visibly saturated and will not pass a purge test. Replace a failed vapor canister to restore proper evaporative emissions control.
