The transmission output shaft seal prevents fluid from escaping where the driveshaft or axle connects to the rear of the transmission, keeping fluid in and contaminants out. Signs of failure include: a red fluid leak at the rear of the transmission, a low fluid level, or a trail of fluid along the underside of the vehicle. Replace a leaking output shaft seal promptly to avoid running low on transmission fluid.
