Brake fluid is the hydraulic medium that transmits pedal force through the brake lines to the calipers and wheel cylinders, creating the pressure needed to stop the vehicle. Signs that fresh fluid is needed include: a spongy or soft brake pedal feel, brake fluid that has darkened and absorbed moisture over time, or fluid that tests above the acceptable moisture threshold with a test strip. Replace brake fluid on schedule - moisture-saturated fluid has a dramatically lower boiling point and can cause brake fade under hard use.
