The cylinder head gasket seals the joint between the engine block and cylinder head, containing combustion pressure and preventing coolant and oil from mixing with each other or entering the cylinders. Signs of failure include: white smoke from the exhaust, coolant loss with no visible external leak, oil that looks milky, overheating, or a bubbling coolant reservoir. A blown head gasket is a serious failure - replace it immediately and inspect the head for warpage before reinstalling.
