The water pump gasket seals the pump to the engine block, preventing coolant from leaking at the mounting surface. Signs of failure include: coolant dripping from around the water pump mounting flange, or a coolant smell and wet stain around the pump base. Always replace the gasket whenever the water pump is removed to ensure a leak-free installation.
