The wheel bearing allows the wheel and hub to rotate smoothly on the spindle or axle with minimal friction, and must handle the vehicle's entire weight and cornering loads. Signs of a failing bearing include: a humming or growling noise that changes pitch when the vehicle changes direction, a noise that increases with vehicle speed, or play in the wheel when rocked at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions. Replace a failing wheel bearing before it seizes and causes a dangerous wheel lock-up.
