The spindle nut secures the hub and bearing assembly on non-driven axle applications and must be torqued to an exact specification and properly staked or locked to prevent it from backing off. Signs of a problem include: a hub that is loose on the spindle, a wheel that has audible play when rocked side to side, or a nut that has no locking feature remaining. Replace a damaged or non-locking spindle nut immediately - a loose hub can cause wheel separation.
