The axle nut secures the front or rear axle shaft to the wheel hub and must be torqued to a precise specification to maintain proper bearing preload and prevent wheel separation. Signs of a problem include: a loose or missing nut found during inspection, a humming or growling noise from the wheel area, or play in the wheel when rocked side to side. Axle nuts are safety-critical - replace any that are stretched, damaged, or have lost their locking feature immediately.
