The wheel bearing retaining ring, or snap ring, locks the wheel bearing into the hub or knuckle bore, preventing it from walking out under lateral cornering loads. Signs of a problem include: a bearing that migrates out of its bore, a growling noise that returns shortly after bearing replacement due to a missing or failed retaining ring, or a ring that is broken or deformed during removal. Always install a fresh retaining ring when replacing the wheel bearing.
