The oil filler cap seals the valve cover opening where oil is added to the engine, preventing oil vapor and pressure from escaping the crankcase ventilation system. Signs of a failing cap include: an oil mist around the filler area, a rough idle caused by a leaking cap acting as a vacuum leak, or a cap with a deteriorated gasket that no longer seals. Replace a leaking filler cap to seal the crankcase and prevent oil vapor from escaping.
