The timing cover seal prevents oil from leaking where the timing cover meets the engine block, and is often replaced during a timing belt or chain service while the cover is already removed. Signs of failure include: an oil drip from the front of the engine below the timing cover, or an oil-contaminated timing belt. Replace the seal whenever the timing cover is removed to eliminate this common oil leak point.
