The exhaust manifold gasket seals the joint between the exhaust manifold and cylinder head, containing hot exhaust gases and preventing them from leaking into the engine bay. Signs of failure include: a ticking or hissing sound from the exhaust that is loudest on cold startup, a smell of exhaust under the hood, or soot streaking visible around the manifold mounting flanges. Replace a blown manifold gasket to stop the exhaust leak and protect nearby components from heat damage.
