The drain plug gasket or crush washer creates a leak-free seal between the drain plug and the oil pan. Signs that replacement is needed include: a drip of oil from the drain area even though the plug is tight, or a gasket that is crushed flat and no longer provides any sealing material. Replace the gasket at every oil change to prevent drips and protect the drain plug threads.
