The harmonic balancer, also called a crankshaft damper, absorbs torsional vibrations from the crankshaft to reduce stress on the engine and connected accessories. Signs of failure include: a vibration felt through the engine that gets worse at certain RPMs, a rubber ring that has separated or shifted on the outer ring, or a wobbling pulley that throws off belt alignment. Replace a failing harmonic balancer to protect the crankshaft and belt drive system from damaging vibration.
