The starter motor uses battery current to spin the engine crankshaft until the engine fires and begins running under its own power. Signs of a failing starter include: a clicking noise when the key is turned without the engine cranking, a starter that cranks slowly even with a good battery, or a grinding noise from the starter gear not fully engaging with the flywheel ring gear. Replace a failing starter before it leaves you stranded with an engine that will not crank.
