The shift shaft seal prevents transmission fluid from leaking around the shaft that connects the external gear selector to the internal valve body. Signs of failure include: a red fluid leak at the side or bottom of the transmission near the selector linkage, or a gradual drop in fluid level. Replace the seal promptly to prevent further fluid loss.
