Lug nuts secure the wheel to the hub and must be torqued to the correct specification using a proper torque wrench to ensure the wheel cannot come loose while driving. Signs of a problem include: a rounded or cross-threaded lug nut that cannot be properly torqued, a lug nut that shows visible cracking, or a set that has been over-torqued and caused hub stud damage. Replace damaged lug nuts immediately - wheel separation at speed is catastrophic.
